Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore and described the illness experience of chronic patients by eliciting verbal description of their experiences.
Participants were ten persons who were diagnosed with chronic illness.
They were asked open ended and descriptive questions in order for them to talk about their experiences in their own terms, Interviews were tape recorded and transcribed verbatim.
The transcripts were analyzed by Colaizzi method, From the protocols. 180 significant statements about ill experience were organized into 80 formulating meanings which were then grouped into four theme clusters. The major themes that emerged from the analysis were ¢¥perceptions of chronic illness¢¥,¢¥response about chronic illness¢¥, ¢¥environmental factors¢¥, ¢¥expansion of consciousness¢¥.
This study offers better understanding on experience of chronic illness and may facilitate more appropriate intervention strategies to provide support.
The result of this study showed that chronic patients and families need nursing care based on a deep understanding of their ill experiences in everyday life.
Nurses have to develop nursing interventions that focus on the psycho-social factors and social support and self regulation in chronic patients.
